Shadows in an Empty Room by Callum Granger.

Callum from Ricky Folk Festival – album out now!

Callum Granger

Callum grew up in a house filled with music, his ears bombarded with everything from Dylan to AC/DC, Steve Earle to Bolan, even Django to Deano but somehow, all those eclectic sounds strangely made sense. He picked up a guitar at 10 and was soon busking on the streets of Norwich, honing his craft and “earning a few quid on a good day”.

Fast forward a few years, and Callum went on to study at Access to Music before heading south at 18 to enrol on (and pass with Merit) a BA (hons) in Contemporary Music course at the renowned ACM in Guildford.

That’s where things really took off. He was playing in all kinds of bands and duos, bouncing between genres and finding his voice not just as a musician and band member, but as a solo artist too.

Now, Callum’s got hundreds of gigs under his belt and he’s had music played on numerous radio stations, including four different songs on BBC Introducing. He’s played at dozens of festivals including Latitude, Weyfest, Selbourne, Chesham Fringe, Broadstairs Folk Week, and Rickmansworth Folk Festival. Oh, and he even warmed up the crowd for Ward Thomas! (In fact if there’s a half decent sound system and a tent and some bunting, Callum probably won’t be far away).

Last year saw the release of a “double” single, and the positive response it generated gave him the push to record his first solo album in his home studio. (which is actually a tiny single bedroom equipped with second hand gear he’s accumulated since the covid lock down). It has taken 11 months of hard work, late nights (and gallons of coffee) to record and produce with Callum singing all lead and backing vocals and playing every instrument you hear. There are stripped back tracks featuring one guitar and one vocal through to tracks featuring a whole band set up. Eventually he emerged blinking back into the daylight…….. The result is The Album ….“Shadows in an Empty Room”.

Shadows in an Empty Room by Callum Granger

There are 11 original tracks loosely orbiting the Americana/contemporary folk galaxy, plus one wild card: a cover song dedicated to his musical heroes, Feeder.

Next year Callum aims to spend more time out on the road performing and searching out new opportunities but he certainly intends to be back in the studio recording new material.

SHADOWS IN AN EMPTY ROOM is available on CD from Callum via Facebook / Instagram @Callummusic1 and is also available on most streaming platforms from December 5th.

Grey belt photos – question

Message received 28th November – via email.

I am willing to take photos.  However, where can we find details of land being designated ‘grey belt?

[ Regarding post: Grey Belt Threats – Request for Photos ]

RDRA response:

Very good question. We’ll have to go through all of the green belt sites in the local plan and see which ones are/can be reclassified as grey belt.  Also look into the developers proposed sites to see if they have been reclassified. At the moment it seems to be a tall order.

But many thanks for your offer of help. Much appreciated.

Council change & e-bike concern

Message received 28th November – via email

By splitting the Council into three different areas will this not mean some work will be more than doubled up. We certainly don’t need more expense.

……………………

As a regular walker at The Aquadrome I have seen many times people nearly hit by cyclists. Introducing and encouraging electric bikes to this area must not be allowed.

PEOPLE WILL BE KNOCKED DOWN.

RDRA response:

Many thanks for your email. County reorganisation is a central government initiative. All 11 district and borough councils have presented their proposals. It’s up to the government as to what option/s they will go for. My understanding is that we may get to vote on the proposal or maybe get offered a fair au comply.  Keep watching the TRDC website for more info.

Re: cyclists and e-bikes in the Aquadrome , we as residents association do not have any direct influence . As you can imagine, these people are also local residents and unless this activity is made illegal, they have the same rights as any other group. What I’d suggest is that you should write to the council and voice your concerns. We as your residents association, raise this issue at relevant forums to make it as safe as possible for all users of the Aquadrome as possible for better enjoyment of all.

Three unitary authority model map in Hertfordshire

Three Rivers supports 3 unitary authority model for Hertfordshire

After the recent consultation on this issue, the council voted 7 to 4 in favour of a three unitary authority model.

Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Leader of the Council, said: “The council has made its decision on what we believe is in the best interests of this district and the residents we serve. It is vital that councils have a strong connection to the communities they serve in order that those communities still feel connected and that they have a say.”

Today, 28 November, the final council submission to the government will be made followed by another public consultation in the Spring and the final final decision on which model it will support – two, three or four unitaries – is expected in Summer 2026.

Any update?

Message received Nov 25, 2025 – via email

Thank you for the recent e news, which I found to be an interesting read as always.

I was very sorry not to have been able to come to the recent Local Forum meeting, which I hope was well attended. Was there any updates on the Aquadrome situation?

Can you let me know when the next public meeting from RDRA members will be as I would like to keep up to date on local issues.

What is the latest news regarding the zebra crossing on the canal bridge, any signs that something might be happening to improve this?

RDRA response:

Many thanks for your email. We’ll post updates on all current and live issues that we are actively engaged with on our website. Regarding the District council meetings and updates please keep up with the council website updates:
