Message from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Services.
In the run up to Christmas, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service are releasing a new road safety campaign for older drivers which also gives support to family or friends of older drivers, to have conversations around driving.
As we all age, we must consider the following:
- Understand your legal obligations, including DVLA rules and licence renewal requirements.
- Medical or eyesight checks.
- Complete a self-assessment.
- Driving assessments.
- Refresher training course.
- Vehicle adaptations.
- Plan ahead for changes to when, where and how far to drive.
- Plan for the possibility of retiring from driving, with support.
- IAM RoadSmart: Guidance for Older Drivers
- Age UK: Renewing your driving licence at 70
If you are worried about a friend or family member’s driving, you can get advice here.
Remember – stopping or adapting is a positive safety decision, not a failure.
This campaign will sit alongside a more general one, being run by Herts Police – A Split Second – which focuses on more general road safety advice, including information for younger drivers.
